There is lots of choice and a big variety of accommodation options for Backpackers. Check out the lists below. You choose between little, big, old converted houses, purpose built, backpacker hostels by (and on) the sea, right in the city centre, in the country, hostels in the hills. There's houses, hostels, cabins, tipis, boats, camping spots.
Book directly with the backpacker hostel you want to stay at. Email direct off this site or phone (have your credit card number ready). At many times of the year you will get a bed if you show up on the day, particularly if you arrive earlier in the day. Or if that hostel doesn't have a bed they will most probably suggest or ring round other hostels (we're a pretty friendly lot). I f you have found this site useful and make an enquiry from it it would be great if you could let the operator know that you heard about them via BackpackNelson.com. |

NELSON CITY
The main urban hub of the region with lots of different accommodation choices. Nelson is a lively city with loads of bars, cafes, cinemas and something going on at most times of the year. Every weekend there are markets in town on both Saturday and Sunday in Montgomery Square. In the Spring a Farmer's Market is starting - every Sunday at Founder's Park and the region's new Museum will be opening right in the centre of town. There's also the World of WearableArt Museum, the Bead Gallery, Bone Carving, good walks (inc up to the Centre of New Zealand), microbreweries and much much more ...
Most activity operators will pick up and drop off from hostels in Nelson City (including Abel Tasman ones). Also many of the town hostels offer free lugguage storage so you can leave excess gear whilst you head into one of the National Parks or explore the region.
Good maps of the city can be found on the Harlequin site at the following address: www.harlequin.co.nz/MAPS |
